America’s Condemned Cities: Dark Breeding Grounds For Pestilence & Crime

Written by Capt. William E. Simpson on The Prepper Journal.

Imagine a place in your city where there are thousands of dark abandoned homes and buildings that are devoid of utilities such as water, sewer and electricity. A place infested with rats and much worse. A place where the criminals and the outcasts of a society in decline have accumulated; a place where evil is […]

Feature Friday: A Cottage in Marietta, Ruby’s Inspiration

house-front_thumb.jpg

As I’ve mentioned a few times, my friend, Ruby, is building a Craftsman style lake house at Lake Alatoona here in North Atlanta. If you missed that post, go and see the beautiful lake lot they are building on. It’s going to be stunning! They aren’t too far along yet, but the main floor is being built now. Ruby and hubby found a floor plan from their builder, who took them to see a cute bungalow home off the square in Marietta and that sealed the deal for them. They are building the same floor plan at the lake. Ruby wanted me to see the house and arranged for us to go and take another tour. The homeowner, Sonja, was gracious and allowed me to take photos of their beautiful home. Seeing it in person will help me so much in helping Ruby with making decisions on her new house, so I was excited to see it in person. I am not so good with blueprints and paper, but need to see 3D and in person.

Where’s Paul Revere When You Need Him?

Atlanta Country Living Fair 2014

rhoda-on-stage_thumb.jpg

For the 3rd year in a row, I went to the Country Living Fair at Stone Mountain and as always, it’s a very fun and inspiring place to visit. From vendors selling vintage wares, clothing, jewelry, furniture, and food items, there is something for everyone at the fair. Food trucks and vendors are there to feed folks since you need fuel for all that walking around. The paved paths wind through the woods at Stone Mountain and this time of year is perfect for being outside and enjoying the Fall leaves. This year was picture perfect!

And this year was a special treat for me, since I was asked by Country Living to do a presentation on the Main Stage on Friday. It was a real honor to do that and I put together a Powerpoint presentation of my Before and After house pics, along with sharing how I shop for vintage items to mix in my home. I set up a vignette of my treasures from home and spoke to those who came to hear me speak and it was so much fun. My long time friend, Vicki, went with me to help me with my things and take pics for me while I was on stage. Talk about surreal! If anyone had told me I’d be doing this 10 years ago, I would never have believed it. Just another blessing coming my way.

October is traditionally leaf watching month, when the North Georgia mountains and those mountains north of here are covered in red and gold flaming leaves, those perfect Fall scenes that we all love. Fall is a glorious time of year here in Georgia and I love the crisper air along with the sunshine we get so many days this time of year. It was a perfect time to head up to a winery, Montaluce, in Dahlonega, GA for a tour and tasting. I went with a friend and we had the best time, hiking through a leaf covered trail by the Etowah River, with a group of folks out doing the same thing that we were doing. Enjoying the Fall weather. 5 Ways to Create Curb Appeal & Increase Home Values

front-porch-and-landscaping_thumb.jpg

Since I did my major house renovation on my 1979 fixer-upper and now just this year have begun to work on the exterior of my house, I thought it would be fun to share ideas on how to update the exterior of your home, not only creating curb appeal but also adding value to your home. I’ve often read and heard that outdoor projects can drastically increase a home’s value and I’m sold on that idea. There are many things that you can do to the exterior of your home to give it a welcoming feel and presence on the street. When folks drive by your home or come to your front door, you want them to have a nice first impression. We’ve all seen unkempt houses that have no curb appeal and there’s a drastic difference in one that is well cared for and one that has been neglected.

Den Space Decorated!

built-in-billy-bookcases-and-ballard-chair_thumb.jpg

My downstairs den space has been the one that has taken me the longest to get together. I had “stuff” piled in the corner for at least a year and then earlier this year my dad and I completed the built in Billy bookcases that I had wanted to install in there, making a cozy corner space instead of nothing. This is a long and large room, with plenty of room for a couple of separate seating areas and I definitely needed to put something in the corner. The bookcases look great and are very functional for storage too. I’m finally happy with how this space has come together. Since it has a drop ceiling, it’s not a fancy space, really just a big box with painted paneling and carpet, but I’m very grateful to have a large den space like this.

A Day at ADAC

044_thumb.jpg

Since the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center opened its doors to the public a couple of years ago, they are now offering many more events, like design panels, book signings, and lots more. I still don’t know my way around down there, but one of these days I’m going down to explore all the design shops that call ADAC home. It’s so inspiring to go there and look in the store windows to see all the new things coming out in the world of design. From furniture, to fabrics, there is eye candy everywhere for design lovers like me. Only designers can purchase at ADAC, but anyone can go and look.

Last week was one of their design weeks and they had some famous designers in, speaking on panels about various topics. I caught the one by Darryl Carter, who is very talented and well known in the design industry and lives in the DC area. I loved hearing him speak and seeing his work up on the screen.

The way a project disrupts life can suck the fun right out of it, but the end result is always worth the effort and mess. I remember when we were renovating my house 2 years ago. All I could see was the dust, mess, and wood scraps everywhere. It seemed I’d NEVER get to move in this house. But, I did.

I think that’s where my sister and BIL are living right now. Renovations take time. Especially when you are doing it yourself and my BIL is a major do it yourselfer. I shared the plans of this master bath renovation a few weeks ago, so if you missed that, you might want to catch up on that. All the Before pics are there, so you can see where they started. It wasn’t ugly at all, just time for an update since the house was built in 1998.

My Termite Protection Plan: Update & {Giveaway}

arrow-exterminator-truck_thumb.jpg

A few weeks ago, I wrote about trying to decide what sort of termite protection plan I would go with. After being in this house for 2 years now, I knew I needed to address that and not wait for something bad to happen. So, I began doing research and called 4 companies for bids on their plans. It was an informative time of finding out the particulars of how all of this works. It seems that years ago that the liquid barrier method was the main thing that was used when houses were built to prevent termites from getting in a home. The liquid barrier was added to the soil around the house for preventive measures.

The newer and more well known methods nowadays is the Sentricon system. I had seen these systems being installed before and wasn’t sure exactly which way to go. After I wrote that long post on pest control and termite plans, I was contacted by Arrow Exterminators, here in Atlanta. They offered to work with me, sending out a representative from their company who would also give me advise, based on what I had already researched.

Country Living Fair Ticket Giveaway!

Country-living-fair-Atlanta_thumb.jpg

This time of year is my favorite for getting outside and enjoying the cooler temps, the beautiful turning leaves on the trees, and that overall feeling and enjoyment of Autumn. I’ve had the pleasure of attending the Country Living fair at Stone Mountain here in Atlanta for the past 2 years and plan to go again this year on Saturday, October 25th, meeting up with fellow friends and bloggers. It’s always a fun time, strolling through the vendors and seeing what is out there that you might want to bring home. From antiques vendors, to arts and crafts and food fares, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Plenty of men go to the Country Living fair too, so making it a fun day.

This year, I get to offer 2 tickets giveways here on my blog, so if you are in the Atlanta area and would like to attend the Country Living fair, stay tuned for the details! It goes for 3 days and this will be 2 weekend passes.

Building a Retaining Wall

driveway-and-retaining-wall_thumb.jpg

I so remember driving up to my house 2 and 1/2 years ago when we first looked at it. The yard, with it’s sad and pitiful lack of landscape and the little front stoop that had no curb appeal at all was the first thing I took in. It was a pathetic first impression, but I knew once I got the house that I could improve upon that curb appeal. I could see it in my head. I knew my house needed a proper portico, landscaping, lights and more and all of that would take time. The sloped yard going up my sidewalk was in dire need of help. It sort of meandered down a slight hill, stopping in an unsightly way by the driveway. A pile of dirt with nothing attractive about it. On top of that, coming out of the 2 garages takes a bit of maneuvering to back up a couple of times and then move forward . Rolling the tires across the dirt was part of that and I knew that I needed to keep that area flat and make sure that whatever I did that a bit of rolling tires couldn’t hurt it any.

With English inspired cottages on a winding road in the woods, it’s quite a beautiful sight. There’s a pedestrian footbridge that will link to shops and restaurants later on. Serenbe just keeps expanding and gets prettier every time I visit. The showhouse was so pretty and was a benefit for the new Art Farm of Serenbe, a place for artists to live and work.
